Misc. Notes From the uploader's family library. Loose pages stitched together by the uploader's mother on her faithful hand revolved Jones' sewing machine, so it has proved more convenient to use an A3 scanner. The first inside cover displays an advertisement for the fortunate securement by Mr.Frederick Pitman of "two new MSS. by the author of the celebrated Hypatia Waltz" and reproduces some of the enthusiastic Press opinions of "May Ostlere's Great and Genuine Success". As these comments are dated in months only, prior to that year's looming Christmas music making festivities, it is unfortunately not possible to date the publication precisely. However one of the London periodicals cited is Truth, founded in January 1887, so the earliest possible date for the collection would be 1888.

Misc. Notes From the uploader's family library, on the Launceston Gunner side, as is shown by the music seller's stamp : H.Hayman./Music Warehouse,/Launceston./Pianofortes by John Broadwood & Sons. The Haymans, initially music merchants, were later to diversify their activities with photography as is proven by the 1891 census transcripts. This edition antedates therefore this development. They figure as music dealers only in the 1871 census.

Navigation etc.

  • Incidental to this collection is its editor's second name, a quite extraordinary one it would seem in the Victorian era, but it should be construed with propriety, as is established here.
  • At least part of this collection appears to have been printed in Germany (C.G.Röder, Leipzig). The volume 3 layout for instance corresponds to the "unidentified publisher" mentioned on the imslp Kalliwoda page under the heading 3 Easy Duos, Op.179 & 3 Easy Duos op.180. The Viotti Duets are less easy to identify but can be found in the volume of bound manuscripts held in the Kongelige Bibliothek which has been added to imslp.
It's also similar to Weiss, Jul., Instruktive Violin-Duette in stufenweiser Schwierigkeitsfolge (6 vol) Monatsbericht (1878), p. 228.
  • The last volume of this series was found missing in the uploader's library, but is available in another edition here.
  • The books are progressive order of difficulty.
